Hey Everyone! Come see how great my life is! How NOT to be a Douche Bag blogger


Travelled the world. Experienced life-changing events. Opened your mind. Congratulations, you’re one step closer to making the world a better place.

However…there is a fine line between being an awesome blogger and being a twat.

It’s easy to want to shout from the rooftops about your amazing adventures. And why shouldn't you! You've taken that courageous step into the unknown, embraced it and (hopefully) become a better person because of it. It’s great to share your story. But don’t be a freakin’ douche bag about it.

This is not a preaching post, but simply something I’ve tried very hard not to do (and yet still found myself doing).

1.      Your life isn’t better than those who haven't travelled. Telling people they are missing out on life by not doing what you’re doing isn’t big or clever. While it is your dream (and mine) to travel the world, that doesn’t mean your friends who chose to stay at home, buy a house, start a family (and actually get on the career ladder) made the wrong decision. They are doing what makes them happy in life. And so are you. So let’s all be friends.

2.      Travellers snobbery – Even if you’ve travelled to 196 countries, there will be someone who has travelled to 197 (space is a country…right?). Einstein even admitted that no matter what you do, there will always be someone out there who is better than you at something. And let’s be honest, if Einstein could admit that, then so should you. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and in the end it’s only with yourself. (Serious bonus points if you can name that song).

3.      Travel blogging not travel bragging. Be helpful, insightful, funny, witty and entertaining. Areas where you might find resistance from fellow friends and readers.

a) ‘Look how better my life is than yours’ photos. Don't be offended if there is a lack of interest from you friends in your album 'Central America Vol. 26'

b) Shunning friends for your new-found life of enlightenment. Remember the little people when you get to the top (yes that was meant as douche baggy as it sounds)

c) I have lots of money at my disposal because of my inheritance/parental savings fund/extremely fortunate upbringing; now watch as I frit it away. This point is best illustrated by the hilarious 'Gap Yah' video

Again, this blog post wasn’t meant to sound preachy. It’s something I need much more practice at. It’s a fine line all travel bloggers tread when telling the world about their adventures. So tell others about your journey, blog, tweet, snap and share. Just don’t be a twat about it J

What does Summer mean to you?


I can feel it. Resonating in my bones in the same way those old women feel their elbows tingle when it’s going to rain.
I blame my iPod for planting the seed of summer in my mind. Secretly on shuffle, it hit my Summer 2011 playlist.
The memories hit me like a brick wall. The people. The places. The parties. The days spent over-sunning ourselves by the lake. The absolute excess that comes with partying in Banff with an abundance of Palm Bay’s and cans of Kokanee. The insanely busy days at work followed by the indulgence of doing whatever the hell you feel like afterwards. Bocce in the park, baseball at the rec grounds, BBQ's on the lawn. Meeting hundreds of people. Talking to everyone. Swapping stories and expanding your mind, morals and opinions. Summer's like those make the world feel a lot smaller.
One of my best memories from last summer was late one summers evening. I'd unintentionally found myself sitting fireside by a serene lake, surrounded by the best friends I'd ever made watching the sun set behind the Rocky mountains. It was in that single moment that I had a sense of overwhelming realisation that I'd achieved everything I'd ever set out do while traveling. It was a complete soul defining moment. My sense of pride in myself rose up in my chest until I thought I would burst.

The best way to describe a summer if Banff is a cross between living in Never-Never Land and The Never Ending Story…but with a lot more alcohol. With a whopping 16hrs of sun, the days last forever. June, July and August are the peak tourist season, whereby the population of the town grows by a couple thousand as visitors influx from across the globe. Days are spent slogging it out at work to keep the customers happy. Come clock-off time, the backpackers and locals alike hit the lakes, trails and open road to play in the National Park. Needless to say my memories of long summer days are countless, and my memories of the nights are, well hazy.
For a small town, Banff knows how to party. With three nightclubs and a myriad of bars, you're never stuck for a night out. Come the warmer weather, the locals seem to emerge from the crevasses where they have been holed-up all winter. They surface, still as friendly as ever and ready to meet and party with complete strangers like they have been lifelong friends.
The bonds formed with others over such a summer are ones many travellers feel across the world. Memories are shared that can never be forgotten and friendships are formed for life.
While summer 2011 is long gone, nothing can take the memories away from us. And so, it will forever be ours. And your own way, yours too.
Who knows what summer 2012 will hold install for me. My mind is free and the road is open. Now pass me the sunscreen, I’m going to the lake.

Banff's Ski Season Finale Begins - Seeing Mt. Norquay off in Style


Yesterday saw the last day of the ski season for one of Banff’s best ski hills.
Mt. Norquay is known as Banff’s backyard ski hill; a mere 10 minute drive from downtown Banff, boasting 28 runs across 190 acres of terrain and home to Banff’s only tubing park.
Their last day of the season had a fantastic vibe to it, the sort you used to get on the last day of school. The staff were giddy and conditions were great! They had received a dump of fresh powder overnight and by morning, Alberta’s famous blue skies had appeared to see them off into summer.
Now many die-hard snowboarders clamour to claim the coveted title of ‘Last Chair of the Season’. As I’m quite obviously a pro when it comes to the ski hill, I aimed for the last ‘Tube’ of the season.
Sick ride, man!
Kick-back as you and your inner-tube are towed up the hill to the start point. Brace yourself as the tube park attendees (tanned, Aussie blokes, of course) position you on the very edge of the drop and grip on tightly as you speed and spin your way down the 60ft slope!
Hurtling down the hill the first time I found I hadn’t quite braced myself for the ride that ensued! I’d quickly lost my hat in the G-Force inducing spinning process and found I couldn’t stand up once I’d reached the bottom, much to the amusement of the tube park attendees who encouraged me to run forwards as soon as I stood up and made fun of my Bridget Jones style hair-do. I bring it on myself.
You can't help feeling giddy as you race back to the start to do it all over again! My #1 Tip is definitely don't eat and tube, or you'll be making an awful mess down the slope!
I can’t wait for Mt. Norquay to open their tubing park again next season. I’ll be first in line with inner-tube (and my hat) in hand.
I’ll be hitting Banff’s two other ski hills, Lake Louise and Sunshine Village as much as I can before Banff's ski season ends on May21st, to shred some serious pow/faceplant down the mountain. Expect an upcoming blog and crazy photos on the annual Sunshine Village, end of season slush-cup!
